In the realm of literature, crafting a perfect crime that captivates and confounds readers is an art form. How can one weave a tale of deception and murder that leaves no trace, leaving investigators bewildered? What could be the motive behind a case of murder and mystery?
On the other hand, penning stories of tragedy and horror is a remarkable feat. Is it possible to channel the depths of human suffering and create narratives that resonate with readers, even if the reader might not personally have gone through such pain? Or is there something more at play, perhaps unexpected twists and turns?
To unravel these mysteries, let’s travel into the land of Vedic Astrology. We’ll explore the celestial houses, the strength of planets, and the lunar constellations known as Nakshatras. By analysing the birth charts of literary masters such as Agatha Christie and Stephen King, we seek to uncover the cosmic influences that may have shaped their extraordinary writing talents.
The Jyotish Toolbox
Before we delve into the intricacies of Agatha Christie and Stephen King’s birth charts, let us check out the different tools we have from the ancient tradition of Vedic astrology (Jyotish) and its belief in the influence of planetary placements on our lives.
Houses
Vedic Astrology uses twelve houses, each representing a different aspect of life. For our literary legends, the 5th house of creativity will be a major focus, as it sheds light on their artistic pursuits. However, we won’t stop there! We’ll also explore other significant houses. These 12 houses are interconnected, forming a tapestry of our needs, desires, and experiences.
As we journey through this article, we will explore the profound meanings of each house, unravelling the ways in which they shape our lives. From the intimate realm of the self to the expansive horizons of our careers and spiritual aspirations, astrology offers a lens through which we can gain a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
Moonlight Serenade
Under the intensive guidance of my teacher, Penny Farrow, our Sangha places great emphasis on Nakshatras, the lunar mansions in Vedic astrology.
Nakshatras represent the Moon’s recurring journey through a specific circle of stars, forming the foundation for astrological calculations. As the Moon completes each cycle, it traverses smaller clusters of stars within the constellations.
These clusters, known as Nakshatras, were later integrated into the 12 Rashi (zodiac signs). Each Nakshatra carries its own unique qualities and influences, offering insights into our personality, life path, and spiritual evolution.
By understanding the placement of the Moon in our birth charts, we can gain a deeper comprehension of our strengths, weaknesses, and potential. Nakshatras provide a powerful tool for self-discovery and personal growth.
The term “Nakshatra” holds several meanings, but the most prevalent interpretation is “that which does not decay.” This concept is rooted in the tale of the Nakshatras, the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati.
According to legend, the Moon married all 27 daughters of Daksha. However, he favored one daughter, Rohini, over the others. This favouritism angered the other wives. A curse bestowed upon the Moon caused it to eternally dance between fullness and emptiness, completing a cycle every 27 days.
Despite this curse, the Nakshatras remain eternally present in the sky, guiding the Moon’s journey and influencing the lives of mortals. Their enduring nature symbolizes the concept of representing the timeless and immutable aspects of the universe.
Tale as old as time
Time holds a profound significance in our lives, as evidenced by the numerous sayings that revolve around it: “Only time will heal,” “Only time will know,” “Only time will tell.”
Indeed, our lives are structured around time, from our daily schedules to the milestones we celebrate. Vedic Astrology, too, is intimately connected to time, as its calculations rely on determining the precise moment of an event, whether it be a person’s birth or a significant celestial occurrence.
By studying the interplay of celestial bodies and their movements over time, the great parasharas seek to understand the rhythms and patterns of life. As written in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, alignment of planets and stars at the moment of birth can influence a person’s traits, potential, and life path.
Time, therefore, serves as the canvas upon which the astrological tapestry is woven, providing the framework for understanding the unfolding of events and the interconnectedness of all things.
In Vedic astrology, the system used to determine the timing of specific periods in an individual’s life is known as Dasha. One of the several meanings of Dasha is “a state or condition of life or
period of life” (Sir M. Monier-Williams, A Sanskrit–English Dictionary). One of the widely used Dasha systems is Vimshottari, which translates to “120.”
This system assumes a person’s lifespan of 120 years and calculates the duration of each period of life accordingly. The Vimshottari system helps to outline the timing of significant events and life stages in a person’s chart.
The 5th house
What astrological placement commonalities can we find in the fifth houses of Agatha Christie and Stephen King? When examining this house, which governs authorship, artisanship, and creative writing, we discover remarkable similarities.
The fifth house is a crucial area of focus for both Christie and King due to its exceptional quality. We will investigate any planetary placements within this house and assess the strength of those planets. Additionally, we will examine the lord of the fifth house to determine its influence on these renowned writers.
To identify strong fiction writers, we seek individuals with prominent fifth house profiles. By analyzing the fifth houses of Agatha Christie and Stephen King, we aim to uncover the astrological clues that contribute to their extraordinary story-telling abilities.
Let us begin with Agatha Christie (See Chart 1). The lord of her fifth house is in her Lagna (first house). This placement suggests that her talent will ultimately bring her financial success. Moreover, her fifth house is unafflicted from any malefic planet influences and is aspected by a strong and benefic Venus. This combination bestows upon Christie a “Chatra Yoga,” a configuration that indicates royal power and supreme discernment.
As a detective, she possesses a keen eye for observation, a trait that is essential for noticing subtle details that others may overlook. In Christie’s chart, Jupiter aspects the eighth house, which is associated with hidden knowledge and secrets. The lord of the eighth house is also situated in a strong position and is exalted in the divisional chart known as D9. However, the eighth house is also afflicted by Mars, indicating potential challenges or obstacles related to her life.
Agatha Christie’s strong fifth house and the influence of Jupiter on her eighth house suggest that she possessed a deep understanding of hidden knowledge and secrets. This knowledge, combined with her keen observational skills, may have contributed to her ability to craft intricate murder plots and create memorable crime novels.
It is noteworthy that Christie studied under an experienced pharmacist, gaining knowledge about poisons and their effects. In 1917 she completed the exam of the Worshipful Society of Apothecaries. This practical experience have provided her with the insights necessary to create realistic and believable murder scenarios using poison as a deadly weapon.
Furthermore, Christie’s experience as a nurse during the war may have further honed her observational skills and exposed her to the darker aspects of human nature. These experiences likely influenced her writing and contributed to the plot and psychological depth of her characters.
Let’s delve into Stephen King’s chart (See Chart 2). The lord of his creativity (5th house) is interestingly placed in the very first house (Lagna), which signifies his own self. This house also holds Jupiter, the planet of expansion, and his Moon, the ruler of his chart (Lagna Lord) but weakened in this position. But hold on! This seemingly weak Moon isn’t as simple as it seems. It’s engaged in a powerful exchange (Maha Parivartana) with Mars, the planet of action, in a highly fortunate house (Kendra and Kona). This exchange brings about auspiciousness for him.
This isn’t the only trick Moon has up its sleeve. It’s also believed to have formed a Nica Bhanga Raja Yoga, a special combination for exceptional success. These placements likely contribute to King’s captivating works. His writing captivates audiences with suspense, iconic characters, and gripping plots.
The Yogas of Success
Earlier, we discussed briefly about houses and their connection to Yogas (planetary combinations bringing auspicious results). Now, let’s dive deeper into what truly propelled Stephen King and Agatha Christie to household fame. We’ll explore the factors behind their talent and how they achieved such remarkable success. Interestingly, we’ll also see if there are any similar Yogas we can find in their charts.
Agatha Christie’s chart does indicate a Yoga for resilience in the face of life’s challenges. However, this doesn’t translate to immediate solutions. We see evidence of this in her mysterious disappearance in 1926 during a particularly difficult time in her personal life. This incident highlights that while the Yoga might have provided her with the inner strength to navigate this challenging period, it couldn’t prevent the initial emotional turmoil. Aside from giving her strength through her challenging life period, this Yoga also help her to achieve her financial success.
Let’s delve into the source of Agatha Christie’s sparkling talent. Her chart reveals a rare Yoga involving Jupiter, known as Susubha Yoga. This is particularly auspicious! Additionally, while we saw a similarity in both Christie and King’s debilitated Lagna Lords (chart rulers), Christie also possesses Nica Bhanga Raja Yoga, a powerful combination for exceptional achievement. But the true “chef’s kiss” here is her Susubha Yoga, signifying remarkable fortune and success associated with her writing.
Adding to her remarkable chart, Agatha Christie might also benefit from a Maha Raja Yoga involving the Sun and Mercury. This powerful combination, sometimes also called a Raj Yoga, can indicate achieving success and recognition through activities one enjoys. In Christie’s case, this could explain how her talent for writing translated into significant fortune.
Agatha Christie’s chart reveals a confluence of planetary blessings that likely contributed to her artistic genius and clever plotting. The presence of both Malavya Yoga (Venus) and Bhadra Yoga (Mercury) suggests a potent combination for artistic expression and sharp intellect. These auspicious Yogas, present since birth, empowered her creative flow. Additionally, a well-placed planets in her 10th house (career) likely brought stability and success. Furthermore, with Mercury as a strong lord of her 10th house Bhava, a Khyati Yoga (fame Yoga) is also present. This combination would further bolster her rise to literary fame.
I can’t contain my excitement about Agatha Christie’s chart! We haven’t even mentioned her Budha-Aditya Yoga yet, formed by a powerful Mercury! This combination is particularly significant for intellectual pursuits and communication, perfectly aligning with her literary prowess. Considering the immense success of her work, with billions of books sold and a remarkable net worth, it’s clear these Yogas significantly impacted her life.
Let’s shift our focus to Stephen King’s chart, which also exhibits strong financial indicators. As my teacher aptly said, “Mi Casa Su Casa” (My house is your house), referencing the previously mentioned Maha Parivartana between Moon and Mars. But this is just the beginning!
A deeper look reveals a chart brimming with potential for wealth. Multiple Maha Raja Yogas (combinations for success) involving the Moon are present. These include the Moon-Mars pairing from the Maha Parivartana, Moon-Jupiter, and even Moon-Saturn combination. The Moon’s prominent role across these Yogas suggests a strong likelihood of self-made wealth through writing.
Looking further, we find additional Yogas with strong financial implications. There’s a Dhana Yoga (wealth Yoga) formed by the Sun and Venus, and a possible Chandra Mangala Yoga (combination of Moon and Mars) hinted at by their exchange. Finally, a well-known indicator of prosperity is present – a positive connection between the lords of the Trikona houses (houses 1, 5, and 9). Notice how the Moon, the captain of King’s ship, plays a key role in many of these Yogas, further emphasizing the potential for self-generated wealth in Stephen King’s chart.
While Stephen King’s chart does contain a couple of Asubha Yogas (inauspicious combinations) involving his Lagna, Mars and Saturn, these might not be entirely negative. These planetary placements could have contributed to the hardships he faced, but they may have also played a role in shaping his unique perspective as a master of horror.
It’s important to remember that his chart also holds significant potential for success. Just like Agatha Christie, he possesses a powerful Budha-Aditya Yoga formed by a strong Mercury, indicating exceptional intellectual ability and communication skills. Additionally, the presence of a Kesari Yoga (a Yoga associated with leadership and influence) further bolsters his chart.
The Nakshatra
Agatha Christie’s chart holds a remarkable placement – three of her planets, the Moon, Mercury, and Jupiter, all reside in the auspicious Hasta Nakshatra. This Nakshatra is known for its association with skilfulness and expertise, particularly in communication and language. This placement likely amplified Christie’s talents in crafting clever wordplay and wielding the magic of words through her authorship.
The influence of Hasta Nakshatra might also contribute to her creativity and persistence, characteristics often seen in those born under this influence. This potent combination of planets and Nakshatra likely played a significant role in her ability to weave captivating stories and inspire readers.
Let’s delve deeper into the specific planetary placements that likely contributed to Stephen King’s fame and fortune. While these planets reside in different Nakshatras (lunar mansions), they act as his power source according to Vedic Astrology.
His Moon in Jyestha. This Nakshatra, associated with the elder who protects, might have instilled in King strength and courage, valuable qualities for overcoming challenges in his career. Mars in Punarvasu. Punarvasu, an auspicious Nakshatra, could have brought him wisdom and abundance, further supporting his success. Jupiter in Vishaka. Jupiter’s placement in Vishaka, a Nakshatra known for ambition and sharp skills, might have fueled his motivation and honed his craft.
Interestingly, just like Agatha Christie, King’s Mercury also resides in the Hasta Nakshatra! Hasta is associated with expertise in communication and language, potentially amplifying King’s writing abilities.
What fuels their passion for the mystery and horror genres?
Both Agatha Christie and Stephen King faced rejections before achieving publishing success. However, they didn’t give up. Christie, even while managing family life, persevered and continued writing. This unwavering dedication is a key ingredient in their success stories.
Two of Christie’s planets reside in the Mula Nakshatra, symbolized by the plant root. This Nakshatra is known for its ability to delve deep, much like a detective investigating a crime. This placement might have contributed to her affinity for crafting intricate murder mysteries.
Agatha Christie’s genius lies not only in crafting intricate plots but also in developing unforgettable characters. Her iconic detective, Hercule Poirot, with his distinct personality and brilliant mind, has captivated readers for generations.
Christie excels at weaving seemingly unsolvable mysteries. Take, for instance, Murder on the Orient Express (1934), where a murder takes place on a luxurious train with a limited number of suspects. Or, consider the chilling atmosphere she created in Hallowe’en Party (1969) which later made into a movie A Haunting in Venice (2023).
Stephen King, like Agatha Christie, faced initial setbacks. He could have easily settled into a routine life, but his passion for writing wouldn’t be silenced. He famously developed a system, literally pinning every rejection notice on a wall. This unwavering determination ultimately paid off when he received his first “yes” from a publisher.
Interestingly, King’s Ascendant Nakshatra is Pushya, known for its nurturing and compassionate qualities. This placement might explain his tendency to write stories that advocate for the bullied, like in his Carrie (1974). However, Pushya also has a playful side, which could manifest in King’s ability to craft thrilling and suspenseful horror stories like The Shining (1977).
A Matter of Timing
After six rejections, Agatha Christie finally found her breakthrough during her Rahu dasha in 1919. The Bodley Head, the seventh publisher to receive her manuscript, saw the potential in The Mysterious Affair at Styles and offered her a contract for five more books.
Another mark of a turning point in Christie’s career. Her first novel for a new publisher, Collins, became a landmark in detective fiction. The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, published in 1926 during her Jupiter dasha, achieved phenomenal sales success and cemented her reputation as a master of the genre.
Stephen King’s journey to becoming a full-time author began with a crumpled rejection. He initially wrote the first few pages of a story about a bullied girl, but fearing it wouldn’t resonate, tossed it aside. Thankfully, his wife salvaged the manuscript and encouraged him to continue. During his Venus dasha, this persistence paid off when Doubleday & Co. accepted the completed story, titled Carrie (1974) for publication.
The success of Carrie in his Venus dasha proved to be a turning point. His editor at Doubleday informed him that a major paperback sale could enable him to pursue writing full-time. Emboldened by this prospect, King and his family left Maine that same fall and relocated to Boulder, Colorado. This new environment would serve as the inspiration for his next novel, The Shining (1977), written during their nearly year-long stay.
A testament to his enduring success, Stephen King has authored over 50 books, captivating readers worldwide. His contributions to American literature have been lauded with esteemed honors, including the 2003 National Book Foundation Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters and the 2014 National Medal of Arts.
While astrology isn’t the only factor shaping our lives, it can offer valuable insights. Genetics and environment undoubtedly play a significant role. However, the positions of planets at our birth (birth chart) might influence our personalities and experiences. Astrology can be a tool to explore these potential influences, but it’s important to consider it alongside other factors.
